Timothy McDonald was born in New South Wales on 4 October 1971. He enlisted in the Army on 10 May 1989 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry. He underwent SAS selection in 1993 and was posted to SASR on 1 July 1993. Tim came from the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment with the rank of Private on posting to SASR. Tim died on 12 June 1996 when two Black Hawk helicopters crashed at the High Range training area near Townsville in Queensland. Tim’s next-of-kin at the time of his death was his father.
