Mihran (Avey) Avedissian was born in Addis Ababa Ethiopia on 2 January 1967. He and his parents immigrated to Australia when he was three years old. Mihran enlisted in the Army on 3 October 1984 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Signals. He was posted to 152 Signals Squadron on 4 March 1987 and underwent SAS selection in 1989. Avey came from 104 Signals Squadron with the rank of Signaller. Avey died on 12 June 1996 when two Black Hawk helicopters crashed at the High Range training area near Townsville in Queensland. Mihran’s next-of-kin at the time of his death was his mother.
