Michael Bird was born in Western Australia on 7 April 1968. He enlisted in the Army on 11 August 1987 and was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry. He underwent SAS selection in 1991 and was posted to SASR on 22 May 1991. Michael came from 2/4th Battalion the Royal Australian Regiment with the rank of Lance Corporal but reverted to the rank of Trooper on posting to SASR. Michael died on 12 June 1996 when two Black Hawk helicopters crashed at the High Range training area near Townsville in Queensland. Michael’s next-of-kin at the time of his death was his wife.
